Help!!! for ASEAN Membership-Papua New Guinea
In the midst of the undying issue of global financial crisis, an unexpected seeking of help was received by Philippines from Papua New Guinea asking its full support for their bid of being a full member of the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations).
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Michael Somare asked President Gloria Arroyo’s support yesterday for this particular issue. He (the Prime Minister) stressed that he would like to make their country from being just maintaining a special status observer to that of our country… a full member of the paramount global organization (ASEAN).Minister Michael Somare also said that his represented country is able and ready to fulfill the necessary requirements of becoming a full member of ASEAN.
The Philippines and Papua New Guinea forged yesterday a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on fisheries cooperation and joint protection efforts of marine resources between the two countries. Mrs. Arroyo and Somare witnessed the signing of the MOU at the Shangri-La Resort in Boracay. Signing for the Philippines was Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap and National Fisheries Authority Minister Ben Semri signed for Papua New Guinea. Thus, this will prove that Philippines is willing to respond to the help needed by the PaPua New Guinea.
