Has anybody ever thought that a plant which was only seen on the back of our houses could be our new “weapon†against poverty, and even climate change? Well, better believe it because studies show that it is true. Proving that it is indeed a super vegetable, Malacañang has tapped “malunggay†(moringa) in the fight against poverty and climate change.
We all know that large scale flooding in our country can be attributed to the also large scale deforestation being illegally practiced on our country. And this brings enormous damages to us people. We also know that because of the global financial crisis, a lot of our workers are experiencing being workless. And our government is expected to do actions to lessen the “damages†of these complex problems….and they found another help they can tap. Not a person or not even an agency. It is a plant-Moringa, known to many of us as malunggay.
National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) chief Secretary Domingo Panganiban pledged the full cooperation and their full support to the local malunggay farmers to provide more works for those who doesn’t have any means of living. Also, malunggay tress can help make the quality of our air and can significantly reduce flooding, as he stressed this during the induction of the newly elected officers of the Moringa Growers Federation of the Philippines.
These are but only few bases why moringa or malunggay was eyed as a weapon by the Malacañang against the growing problem of poverty and possibly against also the global warming.

Mr. Chip Tsao a Hong Kong journalist of HK Magazine Online wrote a contemptuous article regarding the rights and dignity of domestic workers. Mr. Tsao makes it appear that it is alright to denigrate Filipino workers in hongkong and take potshots at any filipinos.
Part of Tsao’s column read: “As a nation of servants, you don’t flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter.â€
He further wrote that he “summoned Louisa, my domestic assistant who holds a degree in international politics from the University of Manila, hung a map on the wall, and gave her a harsh lecture.â€
Tsao threatened to sack his domestic worker should war breaks out between the Philippines and China “because I would not risk the crime of treason for sponsoring an enemy of the state by paying her to wash my toilet and clean my windows 16 hours a day.â€
This is a clear display of race and class discrimination as it “tramples on the dignity of our Filipino workers and as human beings.â€
“This disgusting, derogatory, and vile remark can only come from dim-witted and mediocre writing. The magazine should apologize straightaway. The article reflects the kind of attitude that promotes abuses against Filipina workers,” Hontiveros said. That is absolutely right!
Mr. Chip Tsao is an unworthy foreign employer and should be banned from going to the Philippines.
The year 2008 has once again been a test of endurance and financial stability for the labor industry. The global financial crisis, set off by millions of unpaid employees that force the Big Computer Manufacturer AMD to reduce its staff in the administrative sector and production, to address the serious economic crisis in place this coming January.
According to DigiTimes, which contains some rumors circulated in the area, from next January AMD could start to cut its jobs. If this item was correct, the reduction would affect about 1,500 employees, 10% of the total labor force in AMD. This decision is the result of a little favor, with a general collapse in demand for computers, economic stagnation and financial crisis worldwide.
The posts affected by this wave of redundancies would be mainly linked to the production branch of Sunnyvale and administrative staff to a lesser extent. The planned redundancies as it would add to 1650 employees last April and 500 in November. AMD has not issued official statements on the subject, but confirms that its turnover has fallen by 25% in the fourth quarter of 2008 compared to the previous quarter, a bad result mainly influenced by the crisis eCom and demand reduction in professional and consumer.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Their research, appearing in Thursday’s issue of the journal Nature, adds to the growing push to explore further the moon Enceladus, as one of the solar system’s most compelling places for potential life.
Using images from NASA’s Cassini probe, astronomers had already figured that the mysterious plumes shooting from Enceladus’ icy terrain contain water vapor. New calculations suggesting the gas and dust spew at speeds faster-than-sound make the case for liquid, said study lead author Candice Hansen of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab in California. Her team calculated the plumes travel more than 1,360 mph.
Reaching that speed “is hard to do without liquids,” Hansen said. While her paper offers more evidence building on what others have found, she added that her research is not the final proof of liquid water on Enceladus (pronounced en-SELL-ah-dus).
Other planetary scientists, such as Andrew Ingersoll at the California Institute of Technology, said the research is good, but that it is possible to achieve such speeds with ice particles and at cooler temperatures. So Hansen hasn’t proven her case yet, he and other scientists said.
Carolyn Porco, the head of the Cassini camera team and an astronomer who didn’t take part in Hansen’s research, said “the evidence in my mind is building on liquid water.” That moon, one of 60 circling Saturn, “has become the go-to place” for exploration in the outer planets, she said.
Europa, a moon of Jupiter, may have a liquid ocean beneath its frozen surface. But Enceladus, thought responsible for producing one of Saturn’s rings, is more accessible, Hansen said. “Enceladus is sort of helpfully spewing out its innards,” she said.

Tips to save mother earth:
-

Implement the 3Rs: Re-use, Reduce and Recycle -
- Use environment-friendly items.
- It must start in our homes. Learn to segregate your waste and start composting our biodegradable trash.
- Recycle and sell or give away old newspapers, cans, bottles properly.
- Buy products in their largest size
- Reduce use of disposable packaging and plastic bags
- Avoid products that have CFC.
-
Conserve energy -
- Use electricity and water judiciously.
- Replace incandescent bulbs with Fluorescent bulbs
- Plan your trips; multitask
- Keep burners and air conditioner filters clean
- Dry your laundry outside
- Turn your cell phones off whenever possible. It would reduce carbon fumes from the fossil fuel requirements of your power consumptions
-
Utilize Technology-
- Pay bills online
- Like in the Philippines in which surrounded by water, Filipinos must invest in desalination plants for the coming droughts.
-
Plant more trees -
-

We should plant more trees! Apart from being the source of medicine, trees prevent soil erosion and landslides. They also help protect our underground water reserves.
- Plant assorted plants, like ornamentals and other varieties. It cushions the blow of the summer heat. It also invites birds.
- Let’s not cut down trees.
- It can reduce cooling cost; Rural Folk should replace trees they felled from firewood.
-
Information Dissemination -
- Educate the perennial garbage throwers in our waterways will certainly rejuvenate our environment.
- Awareness of earth destruction will move us to restrategize our local and universal concerns on environmental crisis.
- Speak up! Support actions on Green living.
- Raise funds for Mother Earth
- Join or volunteer for the events on Earth Hour.
-
Go Vegetarian-
- Go Vegetarian, save the earth, save yourself.
- Eating meat produces more carbon footprints. And look at the bodies of vegetarians WOW!
-
Control the population growth -
- We should stop at two kids, Imagine seven billion people exhaling 10 grams of carbon dioxide each into the air. That’s 70 million kilos of carbon dioxide.
-
Be responsible motorists-
- The destruction consequences of global warming were already illustrated by Al Gore, Let’s Stops using our smoke-belching cars.
- Ride a bike once a week when going to the office. It will save you at least 250 liters of gas in a year. That’s 250 liters less of gas population.
- We should maintain the proper emission levels of our motor vehicles.
- Have our cars checked and tuned-up at least twice a year.
- Use unleaded gasoline.
-

Let’s discipline ourselves-
- We should have self-discipline. We should also be responsible, beginning with our own garbage. Impede others from throwing their garbage just anywhere.
-
Go Back to Basics -
- To help arrest Global warming: live in a simple lifestyle like the Amish of Pennsylvania
- Reduce the use of the earth-s resources to a sustainable level. This means returning to a level of development equal to what it was in 1898. Are we welling to do this?
